Accessible Website Redesign
Design Process
The design process that I followed is the five stages of the Design thinking process: Empathize, Define, Ideate, Prototype, and Test.
The Challenge
An ADA-compliant website that provides the best user experience to customers with disabilities.
Many different groups can benefit from design adaptations, and each has a unique set of needs. During the redesign process, as I moved content or prepared to, I was trying to make sure that everything coming into the new site was ADA-compliant, including photos, videos, and PDFs.
Complying best practices for accessible design
Image ALT Text:
Adding ALT text to your HTML code allows blind people using screen readers to understand what the images on your site represent.
Closed Captioning and Transcripts:
MCCLA requiered to add video content on their website, I have to create the transcripts or closed captioning to help people with hearing loss.
Keyboard-Only Optimization:
To optimize the website for people who can’t use a mouse, by:
- Navigating through the website using only your keyboard, running into and fixing any problems.
- Making sure that the most frequently used pages on the website are the easiest to get to.
- Providing a link at the top of web pages allowing users to quickly skip to the main content.
The site’s navigation:
The dropdowns facilitate responsive navigation and also meet one of the WCAG 2.0 requirements.
Color Contrast and Text Size:
To make the website usable for the elderly, as well as people with vision loss or color blindness, I prioritized readable fonts with high color contrast.
The result
I won’t pretend that this project didn’t put me to the test. MCCLA required a robust website with elegant, on-brand design, an extremely versatile content management system, under the ADA standards throughout that reflect MCCLA’ own commitment with the community and arts—all in under a couple of months.
An Ongoing Relationship
Since the launch of the redesigned website, traffic has soared and conversion rates have doble. Using the website as a springboard (along with our quick turnarounds) I addition to web design I had also create print collateral, newsletter, presentation templates, social media graphics, and much more.
Continual Improvement through A/B Testing
